biography

Matthew Lutz is an artist and educator. Born and raised in Indiana, he now has his home and studio in New Mexico.

Currently, Lutz’s oil paintings include images of flowers representing the lives of specific people, but he also paints portraits and is finishing a series of tree shadows. His past work includes mixed media and printmaking. In addition to painting, Matthew Lutz is an educator, having taught art to students in elementary school through college. He currently teaches at Rio Rancho High School in Rio Rancho, NM.

Matthew Lutz received his Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Taylor University in 1996. He then spent a year in South Korea teaching and creating woodblock prints in his studio. In 2001 he entered the University of New Mexico, but his degree program and work was interrupted by a spinal injury. He earned his MFA with Distinction in 2005. Throughout his graduate program, Lutz was awarded numerous fellowships from both private and public funds.

Lutz has exhibited in group and solo shows near Chicago, in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. His work is in private collections and the permanent collection of the Jonson Gallery in Albuquerque.
